Working ProceduresFor a portrait in oil or pastel the average number of sittings are 2 to 3 for head and shoulders, and 4 to 5 for a 3/4 length with hands. Sittings take place at the same time of day and usually last about 2 to 2 1/2 hours. Frequent breaks are taken and every attempt is made to keep the sitter comfortable and at ease. It is ideal if sittings are held on consecutive days, but not absolutely necessary.
The sitter is asked to bring a variety of attire for the first sitting as time is spent exploring various combinations of pose and background. The first sitting should end with a sense of the overall color scheme and pose on the canvas. Even so, a portrait has a life of its own and may go off in an unexpected direction, once begun.
All payment is contingent upon final acceptance and approval of the portrait. A down payment of one third is requested to hold the sitting dates; a second third upon completion of the portrait; and the final third upon delivery. Travel, shipping, insurance, and framing expenses are additional.
